‘Bunny’ a nickname given to Shaw by her brother Kentardo, is the youngest of 13 and hails from Spanish Town, Jamaica, a region plagued by gang violence. At 10-years-old, Kentardo taught Khadija Shaw how to play football and she would go on to represent her country at age 14.


Jamaica, like many Caribbean countries, has its share of socio-economic challenges. Limited resources, including access to training facilities, equipment, and organized youth leagues, can pose obstacles for aspiring athletes. Khadija Shaw navigated these challenges and made the most of the opportunities available to her with the support of her father George Shaw, a shoemaker, and mother Monica, a chicken farmer.


The celebrated Jamaican footballer excelled in high-school and received a scholarship to study in the U.S. She played soccer for Eastern Florida State College and earned NSCAA first-team National Junior College Athletic Association All-America honors in 2016. In 2017 Khadija transferred to the University of Tennessee. At the University of Tennessee, the goal scoring sensation received numerous accolades. She was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Year in 2018 and 2019 and was selected to the All-SEC First Team.

Khadija Shaw's exceptional performances have not gone unnoticed, as she has garnered recognition and accolades on a global scale. In May of this year, she was named CONCACAF women's Player of the Year, solidifying her status as one of the top players in the game. Shaw also holds the record as the all-time leading goal scorer for the Jamaican women's national team. Her prolific goal-scoring ability has been instrumental in the team's success.

She had a standout season with Bordeaux in the French Division 1 Féminine, finishing as the league's top scorer during the 2020-2021 season. Khadija Shaw represented Jamaica in the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2019. Her participation in the tournament marked a historic moment for Jamaican women's soccer, as it was the team's first-ever appearance in a World Cup.


Khadija Shaw also represented Jamaica in the Olympic Games. She competed in the women's soccer tournament at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, showcasing her skills on the global stage. Additionally, the 26-year-old has received individual recognition for her performances.

In an Instagram post, Shaw noted that she would tell her younger self, "Have fun, believe in your dreams and never stop chasing it because nothing is impossible if you work hard enough for it. Set goals and don’t give up until you achieve them. Keep pushing boundaries and setting new levels. Lastly, focus on the journey not the destination."
